What is it:

Its an All India Exam exam conducted by the prestigious Indian Institutes of Management once a year to fill about 1500 seats in total into the 7 IIMs situated in Ahmadabad, Bangalore, Calcutta,Indore, Lucknow, Kozhikode and Shillong.Though according to the 11th Five Year Plan, 6 more new IIMs are proposed to be opened at Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh,Utarakhand, Haryana and Tamil Nadu. Every year, approximately 2.5 to 3 lakh students appear for the exam in order to secure one of the seat out of a mere 1500 and thus making it one of thetoughest exam in the world in terms of students is to seat ratio.

The exam consists of 2 parts:

The written test - Its is usually held in the 3rd week of November every year and lasts 2 and a half hour. The questions asked in the exam are based on Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Quantitative and English language. There is no fixed pattern of the question paper and as a result the number of questions asked vary every year.

Group Discussion and Interview - The students shortlisted are then called for a GD followed by an interview which is mostly held in the second week of January.

Eligibility:

A candidate must secure 50% marks(45% for the students belonging to SC, ST and DA category) in his/her graduation in order to be eligible to give the CAT exam.

How much does it costs:

For the General Category, the form costs Rs 1400 and for SC,ST category, it is for Rs 700 only.
